How To iconMove single and multiple objects

How To tip iconHow To Tip:

Move single and multiple objects on separate layers using the Move tool or arrow keys.

Selecting an object can be one of the most difficult tasks in Photoshop. By using the Layers palette to build your image, you can easily isolate and move elements. If you create an object on its own layer, you can simply select its layer in the Layers palette and then drag the object in the document window using the Move tool or the arrow keys. If you link layers, you can move their contents together as a unit.

  1. In the Layers palette, select the first layer containing the object you want to move.
  2. Click the column just left of each additional layer you want to move. Photoshop links these layers with the layer you selected in step 1 and displays the Link icon Link icon in the column next to the layer.
  3. Do one of the following to move the objects on the linked layers together:
    • Select the Move tool Move tool in the toolbox. In the document window, drag any object on one of the linked layers.
    • Press an arrow key on the keyboard to nudge the objects 1 pixel.
    • Hold down Shift and press an arrow key on the keyboard to nudge the objects 10 pixels.
  4. To unlink the layers, click the Link icon Link icon next to each layer.
